NYC Weekend

Months and months ago I bought tickets to see Harry Potter on Broadway, both shows back to back on a Sunday.  Since we had only planned to go for the weekend, we decided the best option to was to fly down from Syracuse. A quick 45 min. flight vs. a 5 hr. drive seemed well worth it.

Saturday morning we arrived at JFK and took an UBER to my brother's place on Long Island.  We lucked out on timing since he was throwing his girls a joint family birthday party the same weekend as our play tickets. The cousins had a blast spending time together.

After breakfast Sunday morning we took a train into the city, cabbing it up to Times Square from Penn Station.  C and I went on a retail hunt to find her a suitable outfit to wear to the show since she had only packed very casual clothes (I thought J was overseeing the packing, he assumed C knew what to pack).  After a quick bite to eat at Five Guys we walked down to the theater for Part I of the show.  From start to finish it was truly magical and kept us all highly engaged and entertained.

We had about 2 1/2 hrs. between shows so we walked a couple of blocks to have dinner at John's Pizzeria, always a favorite of mine when I lived in NY.  The kids both polished off two huge plates of chicken parmigiana and J and I split a margarita pizza. After dinner, we rolled out of the restaurant and walked back to the hotel for a quick break.

Part 2 was just as good and even though the show finished up quite late the kids were wide-awake. We had promised them some famous NY Cheesecake for dessert so we walked up to Juniors for a late-night treat.  C's order took the prize - a strawberry cheesecake on top of a strawberry milkshake.  Pure decadence...and sugar.

The next day we had a few hours to kill in the morning before heading to the airport. For breakfast the kids wanted to eat at the hotel breakfast buffet which just about killed J&I. They had no appreciation for how good the restaurants are in NYC and even though we tried, we were unsuccessful in convincing them.  J&Iwere angling for a diner but in the end we ended up at pick-a-bagel on 8th ave. for egg & bacon sandwiches. The perfect choice.  It was classic NY and absolutely delicious.
After breakfast we walked up to the playground in Central Park.  Not surprisingly, climbing and jumping off the large rocks was more fun than anything the playground had to offer.

It's worth noting that Times Square is completely overwhelming with all the crowds, smells, steam pipes, nut jobs and July heat. The kids were not impressed and C made us swear to never take her back. Luckily our last morning was a bit more low-key so I'm sure we can convince her of a return trip as long as we stay clear of Times Square.

A whirlwind weekend but well-worth it - I heart NYC! (even if the kids don't)
