Princess Knight & Dragon Party

For C's 5th Birthday we had a Princess Knight & Dragon party.  I love the theme that C chose (with a little mommy persuasion) which inspired lots of creativity.  All the princesses enjoyed themselves and the two hours flew by.  We didn't even get to play all the games I had planned.

I bought the invite design from Etsy but then I used the character images as inspiration for the rest of the party including cupcake toppers, thank you cards and our kid-size dragon decoration.
Upon arrival, each of the princesses received a sword and shield. I love how the table setting looked like the knights of the round-table.

KK reading the Princess Party book to the girls

After the book reading, the girls decorated their chalice with jewels and made Princess crowns out of pipe cleaners.  The crowns were a bit difficult for the girls to make and they needed help manipulating the pipe cleaners.  In retrospect, I should have cut the length of each piece a bit more so that the crowns weren't so funky.  Oh well, the girls didn't seem to mind.

The girls had a little sparkling lemonade in their beautiful new chalices and then we went outside for dragon slaying practice.  Two adults used bubble wands and the girls were instructed to swing their swords to pop the bubbles.  This was a big hit.  The girls would have kept going all afternoon if we didn't run out of bubbles (unfortunately we don't have any pictures as I was on bubble blowing duty).

Next we played Pin the Fire on the dragon.  Pretty impressive pinning from the girls.  C told me this was her favorite part of the party.   I was so pleased with how the dragon turned out since it looked so similar to the one on the invite.  In fact, it's still up in the family room - I can't  bear to tear it down.
Party food time!  C was very specific about what she wanted to have - popcorn, sausages, pretzels, cheese sticks, graham crackers and hula hoops.  Her wish was granted but I felt compelled to at least put some fruit and veggies on the table.

After snacks, we sang happy birthday and ate Princess and Dragon cupcakes.

It was almost time to go but we did one last activity which was Popping Dragon eggs.  We put princess tattoos in balloons and told the girls they had to sit on the balloons to pop the 'eggs'.  The girls were doing more bouncing then popping so eventually we used pipe cleaners to just start popping the balloons.
In addition to the sword and shield, the girls received goody bags filled with a few 'sweeties' including a castle tin filled with chocolates (love M&S).  I also included a dragon & castle coloring sheet and a maze designed in the shape of a shield.

The brave princesses!

I'm glad we decided to buck the trend and hold the party at our house (vs. renting out a big, expensive space) and only invite a couple of friends (vs. the whole class).  We told C she could invite 5 friends because she was 5.  It was difficult for her to choose but at least it meant she was surrounded by her favorite friends.  And by having a smaller party, we were able to make it more personal and do lots of different activities.  A good time was had by all - most importantly, the birthday girl.

Happy 5th Birthday, C!  We love you xoxo
