One of the things I feel most guilty about as a parent raising our kids in London is that we can't just open the doors and let our kids hop on their bikes to cruise the neighborhood, or head out back to throw a football around. Every outdoor activity requires a walk to a park or ride to a field. Luckily we have a couple of parks not far away, but it's just not the same as being able to roam free.
Not to mention that the kids were also scared of most bugs. When they saw a fly in London they would scream at the top of their lungs, back themselves into a corner and yell, "get it out, get it out". They did not trust J & I in the least when we told them flies were harmless.
So I was thrilled with the idea of a summer cottage at the lake; a place where the kids could explore on their own, without the watchful eyes of parents nearby. I wanted them to be able to open the door in the morning and check back in on their own time (which usually means when they get hungry). To be able to roam around unencumbered, embrace nature and let their imaginations wander in the outdoor world.
I'm so happy I got my wish...
One evening after the sun had just set I was walking down the beach with K and we saw a couple of frogs hopping about. He bent down to pick one up and carried it all the way back to the house.

Then there was a time were C captured a bug and made a home for it in a cement block. She brought it food & water and begged us to check on it before driving back to the cottage.

C also spent many peaceful hours reading Harry Potter outside, with the sound of the sea in the distance and the light wind dancing with her hair.

This place is definitely good for the soul!
