For weeks leading up to Valentine's Day I had been asking the kids if they wanted to go to the store to get cards or something for their class. Both replied with emphatic "no's". That was of course until the night before! It seems I didn't properly explain to them that in the U.S. Valentine's is an actual holiday that is celebrated in school, that most students participate, and most importantly that it usually involves exchanging candy with other students. This only became apparent when one student gave his out on Feb 13 since he would be missing school the next day. Based on the revelation, their tune changed completely.
Luckily we quickly agreed on a gameplan and C and I headed out to Cost Plus World Market to pick up some favorite British treats - Tunnock's Caramel wafer bars for C's class, and Tunnock's Tea Cakes (like mallomars) for K's.

K quickly got down to business and started writing Valentine's to his classmates and teacher. I love that he wrote something thoughtful and personal in each one from "I liked being your math partner" to "Thank you for being my friend", and my personal favorite "thank you for shutting me up to be quiet." Apparently K has trouble staying focused in lessons that are on the carpet so one girl tries to keep him in check. When I asked him about it he was genuinely thankful for her reminders.

He also wrote a Valentine for his teacher which noted, "Thanks for what you taught me in school right now. I love how you make me learn." Love the sentiment however some additional grammar lessons may be in order.
K was insistent that he make himself a valentine too which read, "I like how you are." I hope he feels that same way forever and ever. The Valentine was also signed by George Beard and Harold Hutchins which had me scratching my head until I looked it up and found out that those are the main characters in the Captain Underpants book series which K is a big fan of.
K also gave his sister the most sincere of Valentines, "You are great as you are (without the screaming)."

C has about double the class size so her operation was less personalized, more factory-line in order to get Valentine's made for each student before bedtime. I was cutting and punching while she was writing and then we tag teamed on the wrapping.

I love the way they came out.
Happy Valentine's Day!
