K's school held a poetry competition where all the boys had to learn a poem and then get up in front of the class and recite it. As soon as we heard about it, I immediately started searching through some of the Shel Silverstein poems. Oh how how I love his poems! Reading through the poems brought back a flood of elementary school memories. I distinctly remember a assembly where someone read "Boa Constrictor" to the entire school. Perhaps it was Shel himself?! The illustrations in his books are darling as well.
There were a few poems K was considerating including "How Not to Have to Dry the Dishes" and "Warning: Sharp-Toothed Snail", but ultimately K decided on "Snowball" which was just perfect for him. Funny and not too long (although at times J & I wondered if he actually 'got' it. If you watch the video you'll know why).
Competition day came and went and we asked K how he did. He put on a pouty face and said he was sad because his teacher didn't tell him he did a good job. Seems unlike her but that was his story. J spoke to K's teacher the next day and found out that she needed to pick 4 boys from the class to move on and she hadn't decided yet. A few days later we asked K which boys in his class were moving on. He didn't know exactly but said that 3 boys were asked to recite their poem a second time. When we inquired as to why there wasn't a fourth boy reciting his poem a second time he animately said, "There was...ME!".
While he didn't make it to the finals we are so proud of K's effort!
