While playing tennis at school, C tripped over another girl and fell hard on her arm and wrist. The following day, she was still in a lot of pain and the swelling hadn't gone down so J took her to A&E (the emergency room). After a quick examination, she was sent for x-rays which revealed a slight fracture in her wrist, otherwise known has a 'greenstick' fracture. She was put in a temporary cast which was hard on top but soft on the bottom and provided with a sling.
She was excited to go to school to show off her cast but less excited that she couldn't write (since it was her right hand) and couldn't play any sports.
A week later I took her to the fracture clinic to get her permanent cast. She had been talking about getting a pink cast all week so was quite disappointed when the doctor looked at her X-ray and decided a wrist splint was all she needed. The nurses tried to convince her that she didn't want a smelly, itchy cast but I think if it was up to her she still would have gone for it. On the way out, she turned and asked the doctor if her friends could write on her splint. To her delight, the answer was "yes".
She'll be in the wrist splint for 2 weeks and out of sports for an additional two. The upside is that she has a lot of extra time after school to get her homework completed.
