We've been toying with the idea of getting a dog for a couple of years now but we couldn't agree on a breed. We wanted a good family dog - so a golden or labrador retriever were possibilities - except I was extremely adverse to all the fur. J is also partial to bigger dogs/breeds but given the size of our house and postcard stamp size backyard a big dog just wouldn't work. So in the end we agreed on a miniature labradoodle (agree might be a strong word - I may have said "I want this one" and J didn't say "no"). All the great qualities without the large size or fur! This summer we spent time with a standard labradoodle which also helped confirm that the breed would be a good choice.
I found a highly-reputable breeder through a colleague at work who brought home a labradoodle last year. My colleague couldn't say enough good things about her dog and the breeder. We paid a deposit last spring and have been waiting, waiting, waiting. In late-November I received an email about a litter that would have a dog for us. So exciting! We decided not to tell the kids figuring this would be a great surprise. A dog has been on C's Christmas list for a couple of years now so we know she especially would be over the moon.
On Jan 6th we visited the breeder to select our puppy. It was a complete surprise to the kids and they didn't quite know what was going on. I had told them we were going to visit a farm so when we pulled up to a lovely brick house and were asked to put shoe covers and gloves on they were perplexed.
I had already selected a chocolate brown female, so the visit was just about choosing our favorite. Of course, we walked in and everyone (C, K AND J) announced that they didn't want a chocolate one. At this point it was the breeder who was perplexed. I explained that I had chosen a chocolate color dog and that if we really didn't want that color then we would have to wait for another litter. All agreed that chocolate would do!
There were 3 chocolate brown female puppies and we were second on the list so we only had two puppies to choose from. However the choice was obvious. The "purple" one was the bigger one of the two and was described as "being very energetic and bossy in a good way." The breeder is keeping a puppy herself but said this puppy was her son's second favorite. Lucky us! While we sadly couldn't hold the puppy I was able to take a few photos at our visit. I'm already completely in love with this face!

C made me print out some photos for her that she's keeping at her desk at school. She's also carrying around her journal which contains the complete list of dog names we've come up with. There's well over 50 names but we're doing a good job of voting to narrow them down. The top contenders are:

Coco (Chanel)
Roxie
Tess
Charlie
Maggie Rose
We decided the final selection can't be made until we bring her home and see what feels right. February 4th is the day and C made a calendar for us.
I shared the calendar with the breeder and she accurately replied "Counting the days..... with each day filled with colourful anticipation.....". How right she is!
