2018 Positive Energy

I feel like there is a lot swimming around in my head right now and I'm much less clear or focused on where life is headed.  But one thing I've been discussing with friends is the idea of Positive Energy.  Seeking it and sharing it.  If I had one hope for 2018 is to have more of it in my life and hopefully use that as a guiding light for decisions that lay ahead.

I also have some more tactical goals for the coming year:

1.  Learn to knit, finally.  At my request, my dad bought me a knitting kit for Christmas. After watching a few videos I am now about 5 rows in to my first scarf (snood to be exact).  I'm sure my technique is laughable and the fact that I keep adding extra "stitches?" with each row is concerning but I'm doing it. C is quite impressed and keeps encouraging me to go on.

2.  Get fit, get healthy.  2017 was a tough year for me both physically and mentally.  The Grand Canyon hike in late February was a major accomplishment and I was feeling good about working my body a bit.  But sadly after the trip my workout regime came to a halt.  This was followed by 6 mos. of just being tired all the time, irritable, sad (probably bordering on depressive) and I gained quite a lot of weight.  I spent my time feeling bad and cursing the age gods. Even if I had an inkling to go to the gym, I had no energy to make it there. In November I had some blood work done (for an entirely different reason) and when the results came back I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  Symptoms include tiredness, depression, weight gain. Yep, yep, yep.  The good news is that with some medication I feel SO MUCH BETTER.  I actually wake up in the morning without feeling tired and have energy to last throughout the day.  And I'm so much happier to be around. So now that we've fixed that, it's time to get back to the gym and eat more salads.  I'm excited.

3.  Travel.  This one is always on my list.  I have a poster in our lake cottage that reads "Travel: the only thing you buy that makes you richer."  Words to live by.  Top contenders for family travel this year include a driving trip through UK, Scotland and Ireland, Iceland, Greece, Croatia and Dubai.  So many places, so little time (off).  In February I will be doing another hiking trip with my college girlfriends, this time to Zion National Park. I also want to visit my friend in Hong Kong but I might see if I can tack that on to a work trip to Singapore.

4. More blogging.  I have so many blog "titles" saved but so few actual posts from the past year.  This definitely bums me out as I love looking back at past blogs to see what were up to and to jog my memory.  My incompleteness is due in part to the fact that our home iMac is on it's last legs.  As a result most of my photos were either stranded on my phone or held hostage in iPhoto which crashed nearly every time I opened it.  I'm happy to report that our new iMac is being built as I type and will arrive next week.  So at least I'll have the right tools.  The rest is up to me.

A final thought for the coming year...my friend shared with me a line from Brene Brown that I really loved - "be vulnerable and live bravely in 2018".
