SLO

This past weekend we hit to road and drove about 3 hrs. south to San Luis Obsipo (SLO). The drive down was relatively easy (a.k.a both kids were asleep for most of it) and the scenery was beautiful - rolling hills and acres upon acres of vineyards and veggies.

I tried to get C excited about our trip but about 15 min. after checking into the hotel she announced it was time to go home. Sorry kid.

We had a suite and both kids successfully slept in the same room. Even though each of them squeaked and squawked a bit during the night, it never seemed to wake the other one up (only mommy & daddy - urgh!). It is nice to know that we have options in the future.

Saturday morning we checked out the downtown area of SLO. First stop was the Children's Museum. It was relatively small but had some nice exhibits. At least J & I thought they were nice. C mostly wanted to walk up and down the stairs although she did enjoy the outdoor area too. It got crowded quickly so unfortunately K wasn't able to explore too much on his own.

After the museum we put both kids in the strollers and started exploring SLO on foot. There is an old mission and lots of cute shops and restaurants . Before we knew it both kids were asleep in their strollers. Score!!! We found an awesome little place called Bel Frites where J & I shared a waffle, some frites and belgian beer. Not the healthiest of lunches but definitely the highlight of our day.

In the afternoon we just hung out at the hotel pool. It was chilly but C didn't mind. Luckily there was a hot tub too so we would go back and forth between the big pool and the hot tub. Dad and K went for a swim as well although they were quite content to stay in the hot tub.

On Sunday morning we ventured out to Avila Beach which was about 15 min. south of SLO. There was a great little park next to the beach with swings, slides and a pirate ship!

The beach was part of an inlet so it was relatively calm and had a huge expanse of sand. C had a blast and did not want to leave even when the rain came.
All in all, an enjoyable weekend. While traveling with kids is certainly not the easiest, it always feels good to get away from our normal routine and do some more California exploring.

  2. SLO is a fantastic place to visit for a weekend. It is located in a great part of the State. Next time check out the Apple Farm restaurant (it has a hotel too). It is somewhat of a tourist trap. The kitschy-ness of the place grows on you and the restaurant serves great breakfast.

  3. we actually tried going to the apple farm restaurant for lunch but it was very crowded and we had C screaming "eat, eat" so we couldn't wait the 20 min.
