Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday is one of those small holidays that I just enjoy celebrating. When I was in NY I used to gather friends for po'boy dinners and in CA I would make gumbo.  This year, it was King Cake.  The first bakery I called advertised King Cakes on their website but to my disappointment, they only made them for Christmas.  The second bakery I called was Outsider Tart, our favorite bakery in town run by two Americans.  They have a connected restaurant where they often serve southern dishes so I thought I'd take a chance. The owner had good laugh when I asked and then proceeded to tell me that King Cakes are not something they advertise but are happy to make it for those "in the know".  Apparently he had already made one the past weekend.  "Did I want a baby and cream cheese?"  Why of course!!!

J went to pick it up.  He texted me to tell me the cake was "BIG" otherwise known as standard size for New Orleans.  He wasn't kidding.

My favorite professors from college grew up in Louisiana and they keep Mardi Gras beads in their car glovebox for good luck.  Many years ago I adopted the tradition but keep my beads in my sock drawer.  I brought them out for the festivities!

Much to our disappointment we didn't find the baby on the first night. Or the next night either. But finally on the third day he appeared - K was the lucky winner!

Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!
