Munich Day 2: Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest (held in September, not October) is one big carnival.
Most everyone is in fancy dress.
And there are lots of rides for people of all ages.
C begged us to take her on the really big roller coaster.  J and I were sure she would be too small so we told her we'd ask at the window.  Of course, they said "no problem".  So she and I went.  It was only when they put the lap bar down that it really occurred to me that this was probably not the best idea.  She was very brave although I could tell by her face that she was not enjoying it.  When we got off she announced that she "did not want to go on that ride ever again."
She spotted a much smaller ride which she wanted to go on.  After the roller coaster experience, I thought it would be a good idea to get her back in the saddle.  Even J and K went on this ride.  Again, not the wisest idea.  The ride went around and around..and around and around...seemingly never ending...and at times it was really fast.  C was crying by the time we got off and K was in a state of shock.  That was it for the ride portion of our day.  Time to eat.
There is a variety of food & drink sold throughout the festival.
And then there are the beer halls.  The halls line the streets, each carrying a different brew and specializing in a different food.

Augustiner tent was recommended as the most "family friendly" so that's where we decided to go.  However, after a peek inside, we decided sitting outside in the beer garden was the better choice for us

We ordered a half-chicken, a pretzel and a beer which was all quite tasty.
Throughout the day you can catch well decorated horses from the different breweries delivering kegs of beer to the tents.

It was a super fun but tiring day so we had our fair share of pouts
But nothing that a visit to a playground on the walk back to the train couldn't fix.

  1. Fun! This post brought me back to the time me and two girlfriends went to Oktoberfest and weaseled our way into the Hofbrauhaus tent. Looks like you had such a fun time.

  2. Jealous!! It's interesting how different it gets with kids....same place, but totally different things we see/do!

  3. It does feel a bit strange doing the 'family friendly' version of the trips I once dreamed about going on as a single-gal. Once upon a time I would have lined up at the tents in the am and not left until the wee hours. This was still fun but in a totally different way.
