After leaving Salzburg, we visited two Castles in Bavaria built by "mad" King Ludwig. The first was Herrenchiemsee Palace which was located on a remote island, reachable only by ferry.
It was modeled after Versaille but was never finished and barely lived in.
Out front there were beautiful grounds and fountains.
Unfortunately you weren't allowed to take pictures inside the palace but I can attest to how stunning the rooms were. After the tour of the palace we ate some lunch at the cafe and then took a horse and carriage ride back to the boat.
We spent the night at a hotel in the Alps, in the town of Oberramergau which I can never seem to pronounce. This was the view from our the hotel. So quaint and charming.

In the morning we ventured on to Neuschwanstein Castle, the model for Disney's Cinderella castle. The Castle is high-up on the hill and since it was early in the morning, I had the bright idea to walk up to give us all a bit of exercise. I'm pretty sure I'll never hear the end of that decision. Yes, bribery of ice cream at 10am was involved. Unfortunately the castle was being worked on so half of it was covered in scaffolding, but it was still impressive.

Once we finally made it to the top, we took a tour of the castle and were treated to more spectacular views. We totally lucked out with a clear day.
