This post is long, long, long overdue. In July, we took a family vacation with J's dad to the south of france, in the Haute Pyrenees region. We rented a farmhouse near the town of Trie Sur Biese. Once we arrived we met our neighbors...a herd of cows.
The house was very rustic and charming with exposed wood beams and penny size holes in the floor letting you peak down below. And the grounds were beautiful with hydrangeas and lavender growing in abundance.
I loved the view from my room best in the morning - waking up to a light mist above the grounds. And the cows mooing. Nearby was a lake and in the distance you could catch glimpses of the Pyrenees mountain range.
There was a courtyard with a BBQ and outdoor seating but unfortunately the flies were ruthless and eating outdoors was impossible.
For that matter, eating indoors was challenging too and we became very good at swatting flies with rolled up newspaper. J's dad won the champion award on that front!
I was in love with this tile floor:
But the best part of the house was the swimming pool. On most days we traveled to a local town in the morning but then came back in the afternoon to enjoy the pool.
We had beautiful weather for the week, sunny and very hot so the pool was well loved and well used. Behind the pool was a poolhouse, full of various water toys to play with plus a bathroom which was very convenient.
The only downside was that the tiles from the pool to the poolhouse got very slippery. K fell on his bum a few times and even I went down once. I seriously thought I broke something. On the side of the poolhouse was an outdoor shower. After our final swim in the evening, we all took showers outside and were ready for bed.
Then we'd wake up in the morning and repeat. It took us a while to adjust to french schedules...more than once we arrived at a market or restaurant to find it closed for a few hours around lunch. But aside from the schedule mishaps, the slippery pool tiles, the flies (which the adults had some choice words for!!!!) and at times the unbearable heat, our week in the french countryside was a lovely, relaxing respite in a gorgeous part of the country.
