Austin, TX - Part 1

We've never been to Austin before but when we received a wedding invite from my college friend Dave, we booked tickets immediately.  Not only did we want to celebrate with Dave & Leah but it was also a great opportunity to visit our friends the GVZ's who moved to Austin about the same time we moved to London.

We managed to get a direct flight from London to Austin on the new BA Dreamliner. It was quite a bumpy ride over the Atlantic but luckily we made it safely.  And while the flight was a long one, it was so much better not having to change planes.

For the first two nights we stayed at the Embassy Suites in downtown.  It was a great location, just over the river across from downtown.

One morning we explored downtown, walking along Congress Street to the state capitol.  There was lots of interesting shops and restaurants and neat murals and artwork scattered throughout downtown.

The wedding was held at the French Legation, which was likely an old French embassy but is now an art center with beautiful sculptures scattered throughout the grounds.

The ceremony was held outside under a beautiful tree canopy.  It reminded me so much of our own ceremony at the Beltane Ranch.
Dave asked me to read the poem "This is Just to Say" by William Carlos Williams at the ceremony...the same poem he read at ours.

I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox
And which you were probably saving for breakfast
Forgive me, they were delicious, so sweet and so cold

I'm glad his fiancee was game to have me read it - it was slightly awkward getting up to read having never met the bride before!  Dave is a copywriter by profession and wrote the entire ceremony so it was very personal and extremely funny and witty.  Dinner and dancing was also outside, held under festive white lights.

Overall a beautiful affair for a beautiful couple.

While we were at the wedding the kids were enjoying a pool party and sleepover at the GVZ's.
