Ducking under a bridge along the canal.
After the ride, J visited some danish furniture shops while I took the kids back to the hotel. He found a chair exactly like the one his parents had bought many years ago. We thought we might follow in their footsteps and buy some furniture ourselves but the prices were crazy expensive. It's also hard to make purchase decisions when only one of us can shop at a time!

On our walk, the kids and I lucked out and happened to time it right to see the changing of the guard at Amelionburg.

Next up was Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, located in the middle of the city. It wasn't the scale of Disney, but there were still great rides for all ages and it was a lot less commercial. The rides were situated amongst beautiful gardens giving it all a very charming feel. Plus there were hardly any lines so we were able to go on our favorite rides again, and again, and again....

Speaking of favorite rides, collectively it would have to be The Mine ride, a combination flume ride and buzz lightyear-like shooting game. Along the route through the mine there were light sensors on the wall that you had to shoot. When the sensor was hit it would turn the color if whoever's gun hit it. It didn't take long to become very competitive! Some positions were better/easier than others and whoever had 'green' always seemed to get the most hits. One especially fun thing about this ride is that we could all sit in the same boat.

The kids were also super brave and went on one of the bigger roller coasters. The roller coaster was seriously old school with a person controlling the brakes sitting in the middle of the train. K was pretty gung-ho about going on but C was very apprehensive (Let's face it, even I was a bit apprehensive - our kids were definitely the youngest riders by a longshot) Even after the first ride C wasn't sure she liked it at all but she conquered her fear and decided to try again. By the end she was begging to go on the ride again. We bought the photo from our last go - all smiles.

Another favorite ride included Hans Christian Anderson which was a cross between it's a small world and peter pan's flight. You traveled in a magic box where HCA stories were read to you while you watched wooden displays of the stories. Stories included the princess & the pea, the emperor's new clothes, the little match girl, thumbelina, the ugly duckling and lots more. It was so charming.

One of C's favorites was the drop ride. First C went on it with J and then later in the day she braved it on her own. K wouldn't go near it.

There were games too. The kids played whack-a-mole, J tried is luck at the shooting gallery and K was obsessed with the horses.

We enjoyed a late lunch/early dinner in the park at Faergekroens Bryghus (a brewery), sitting outside on the lake. With swedish meatballs on the menu it was another enjoyable meal with the kiddos.

Earlier in our trip J had stumbled upon the fact that the ice cream parlour voted #9 in the world - Vaffelbageriet - was located in Tivoli. Of course we had to try it and it did not disappoint! The soft-serve cone was about 100x better than Carvel.

Once the lights came on the park became even more charming. We were having so much fun we couldn't tear ourselves away. We stayed way past the kids bedtime but it was oh so worth it!

On our way out one of the guards let the kids try on his hat. I do hope we get back here one day.
