Growing Strawberries

About 6 weeks ago we planted strawberry plants in a small wooden box out in the backyard.  C has been really diligent about watching over the plants, making sure they had enough sun and watering them when the soil was getting dry.  She keeps her wellies by the back door to make trips out every day.

When the green berries first arrived the kids were so giddy.  Like hawks, they watched the berries turn colors - first green, then white, then yellow then red.  Finally it was time to pick our first berries.

Yum.

They taste so much better when you grow them yourself.  C is super proud of what she grew.  And just like the little red hen, she is quick to explain how K did not help at all and therefore should not get to eat the fruits of her labor.

We also have some herbs growing but we haven't been as successful on that front.  The cilantro went to seed very quickly and the mint might be getting too much sun.  But the parsley and basil are thriving.  We have a very sunny spot up against our back windows so we might need to expand our garden next year and definitely include some tomato plants.

  1. That is so awesome! I would love to grow a small garden but the deer in our neighborhood would ruin it.
