Rome Day 3: Colosseum

To me, the Colosseum is the most iconic building in Rome so it also had to be on our 'must visit' list.  C took a turn at navigating, old school style using a paper map, and did fantastic.  I might even go so far to say that she was the best navigator in the family.

Leading up to the Colosseum, you pass through remains of the Forum, the seat of government a long, long time ago (sometime BC which is so hard to get your head around). It was HOT in the beating sun - I can't imagine what it must like to visit Rome in the summer.

Luckily we bought tickets to the Colisseum ahead of time - the crowds were humongous.

Once inside, it was really quite an engineering marvel.

The kids enjoyed climbing around on the old stones while J searched online for information about the history of the Colosseum.  With the kids it's almost impossible to join a tour so we're always left looking at things without really knowing what we're looking at.

We walked around the entire Colosseum on the first floor and then did it again on the second floor.

We ate lunch a few blocks from the Colosseum and then found a nearby bakery, ciuri ciuri, that is known for their cannolli's.  The cannolli was out of this world. I wish we weren't so full from lunch or else we definitely would have taken a few.

The walk back to the hotel was about 30min. - the kids were troopers and walked with hardly any complaining although we did use a stop at Della Palma gelato as an incentive to get them back to the hotel with minimal complaints.

In the evening, we ventured to Osteria da Fortunata, a restaurant just off campo d'fiori.  The pasta arrived in the most humongous bowls, and the kid just dug in.  K loved his pasta with oxtail sauce.  C was less thrilled with hers but enjoyed drawing on the brown kraft paper table cloth.  It was a nice relaxing dinner and we lingered for quite a while after we were finished playing games of tic-tac-toe and hangman.

It was a lovely walk back to the hotel. Not only is Rome a beautiful city during the day, but it looks magical at night too with all the fountains and buildings lit up.  And even though many of the side-streets were not well lit, it felt very safe.
