Clever Girl

On Friday I planned to work from home in the morning so I was going to pick C up from school and then take her to get her haricut. She was so excited about this development and kept reminding me all week that I was picking her up from school on Friday. It's easy to forget that the smallest gesture or promise can mean so much to our kids.

Anyway, there I was at pickup and I walked up to the table where C was sitting with some other children waiting for their parents. Her back was to me so I tapped her shoulder and when she lifted her head and saw me, she gave me the widest of grins and practically jumped out of her chair with pure giddiness. A real heart-melting moment.

It was then that her teacher saw me. "Oh you must be C's mum". Could it really be that it's March and I've yet to meet her teacher? Yikes. Bad, uninvolved parent alert.

C's teacher went on to tell me that "C is such a clever girl. She knows all of her continents and next week we're going to start reading." I should be beaming with pride at that moment, right?! Well I started tearing up. Reading? No, not possible. She's still a baby. Could we maybe just stop time, please?

When I relayed the story to J he told me that C's teacher had asked him earlier that week "what have you been feeding her". I was taken aback by the comment, immediately reacting negatively thinking the teacher was commenting on some behavioral issue C was exhibiting or that she was getting a little chunky, or something. But J was quick to explain that the teacher meant it in a positive way. Apparently C is very self motivated and is constantly looking for her teacher to provide her with more challenges. Hmmm...I wonder where she gets that from?!
