Big Girl Bed - Part 2

C's mattress showed up last week. We had them deliver it on Friday figuring that if the transition was a tough one, at least we had a weekend to work through it. We decided to just put the mattress on the floor to get her used to the idea of sleeping in a big girl bed. Then when the real bed arrives we'll be all set for an easy move (knock on wood!).

J had been talking with C about how her bed was going to arrive and now that she had a BGB, K could have the crib. She didn't really like that idea and said she wanted to keep the crib in her room too. So then J suggested that K sleep in the crib, in her room. That idea was received with even less enthusiasm.

When I came home from work I had a new pillow and sheets for C. She was so excited to get her Big Girl Bed all set up. Once we put it together, she and K had a blast climbing and jumping all over it.
C couldn't wait to go to bed and insisted we get her into pajamas even though it was 1/2 hr. before her normal bedtime. She also insisted that we move all of her 'guys' to her new bed as well as all of her baby blankets. At last count I think she has 7 blankets that she sleeps with. I tried to explain that in the BGB we sleep between the sheets and that she now has one big blanket to use. C wasn't buying it. She slept on top of the quilt with all of her baby blankets. We'll have to keep working on that one.
Before bed we always read the same three books (her choice, definitely not mine). I suggested that I lay in bed with her and read them to her. "Wouldn't that be fun?" Apparently I'm the only one who thought so and was totally denied entry.

After we finished the books I lingered a bit making sure she was comfortable etc. I could tell C was starting to get annoyed. Finally she said, "mommy, turn off the lights and go".
J was laughing at me in the kitchen and said he could totally see her point. His analogy was that it was like when you move into your first home or apartment - you just want the movers and helper friends to leave so that you can just enjoy the newness of what is finally yours.

I'm happy to report that the night was a total success. C did wake up at 4am with a request to 'eat', however that happens every so often so we're pretty sure it wasn't BGB related. When she finally woke up in the morning, she stayed in bed and called out for "mommeeeee" to come get her. So that didn't change at all. And perhaps most indicative of her happiness about being in a BGB was that she told us that K could have the crib.

There will of course be a Part III when C's bunk bed finally arrives. The update we received before the holidays was that the bed would ship on January 15th so we had our fingers crossed that it would arrive by the end of the month. That was until we received the update that shipments are now delayed until Feb 23rd!!!! Not even a 10% discount is making us feel any better. We are so bummed.

  1. Awesome! We don't use a top sheet for G's bed. Just fitted sheet and duvet/comforter. He sleeps mostly on top of it (he covers a lot of ground in his sleep). Now how do I get that "just leave the room" process. I have to stay in the room w/ G until he falls asleep. Sometimes in the chair and sometimes "daddy, lay down right here" (as he pats the pillow).

  2. oh my gosh, I don't know what I'd do if she wanted me to stay in there until she fell asleep. On the flip side, it's so hard to deny them though. I'm sure you melt when G pats the pillow.
