Irish Soda Bread

Since St. Patrick's Day is our unofficial L family holiday, I feel compelled to participate in the festivities. But while my hard-core drinking days are long behind me, an Irish Soda bread is an absolute must. I love my mom's recipe, but this year I found a recipe for Irish Soda bread scones which I just had to try out.

C was my sous chef and I enlisted J's help to knead the dough.
I have to say, they came out fantastic!

They tasted very similar to my mom's recipe and the egg wash on the top was a nice touch. J awarded the scones a "this could be in starbuck's" comment, which is his highest compliment level for baked goods.

P.S. There was a note which accompanied the recipe - "if you are actually Irish, the idea of turning a national food symbol into something entirely British is blasphemy." So true! But given the recent discussions in our house it seems somewhat fitting.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
