Eight years later I received a box from Jere in the mail. It was 12 finished squares and the remaining fabric. By this time, I had taken a few classes and had learned to sew and quilt myself. Jere knew this and decided it would be that much more special if I were the one who finished the quilt.
On 4 of the squares, Jere embroidered little red hearts so that I would always know which squares my mom had sewn herself.

Treasured Quilt
I wrote last week about a favorite treasure, a box that my mom gave me which holds a whole lot of love inside. This week's treasure is also mom-related. My mom started quilting when I was in high school with the help and encouragement of her good friend Jere who was also a quilter. I used to love visiting fabric stores with my mom and she promised to make me a quilt one day. Unfortunately she died before she got around to it. When I was going through her things, she had just started a new quilt so I packed up all of her fabric and gave it to her friend Jere.

Is this the quilt hanging in your dining room? It's so lovely and I can imagine it instantly warms you up whenever you look at it.
ReplyDeleteI remember the quilt in your dining room! It has such a beautiful story behind it, I would never have known! Thank u for sharing the story.
ReplyDeleteA&N - I dont' think you guys ever saw this quilt. It used to be on the bed in our guest bedroom which is now C's room. I need to figure out a place to put/hang it. The one in our dining room is my farmer's market quilt with all different veggies.
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely incredible. The hearts are an amazing touch-what a friend.
