We arrived about one and a half hours before the torch which was a smart move as the area was already filling up with people. More importantly, we were able to find a spot on the shady side of the street.

During the lead up, the Olympic sponsors were out and about handing out tchokes and free commemorative bottles of Coke.

The procession was led by a bus carrying all the Olympic torches and the runners to follow. Who knew?
And then the moment we had been waiting for. By this time our primo spot had been overrun by hordes of latecomers so we got ourselves positioned as best as possible to see the flame.
The torch bearer runs surrounded by a squad of other runners, security I presume, so it was a bit hard to get any good pictures. But we came and we saw. Just getting out into the community and being part of it was pretty thrilling and it got us even more excited for the start of the Olympics. It also had us reflecting on what a special time this is for us to be living in London.
While we waited for the crowds to dissipate a bit before walking home, J started chatting up one of the policeman. Just before this, a couple of the policemen were taking pictures with the crowd and letting the kids try on their hat. Definitely a different relationship with the public than the officers back in the states seem to have.
